Isolation Zone Reminders

Competitors will enter an Isolation Zone (ISO) when they arrive at the gym. This is so that no one sees the boulders before it is their turn to climb.

  • Competitors must remain in ISO until it is their turn to climb.

  • Only competitors, certified OCF coaches and OCF Officials will be allowed into ISO. Everyone must be checked into ISO before it closes. No late entry will be allowed.

  • There will be a suitable warm-up area inside ISO as well as washrooms, a large area for relaxing and hanging out, and a water bottle refill station.

  • While in ISO, competitors and coaches are not allowed to communicate with anyone outside of ISO (the use of phones or other communication devices is not permitted).

Once competitors move into the competition area, they remain subject to isolation conditions

  • Athletes may not communicate with anyone other than Officials until they are finished competing.

  • Spectators are encouraged to cheer for the athletes but cannot provide advice (“beta”) – both while a climber is on the wall climbing and during rest periods between their attempts.

  • Examples of forbidden beta include “Use the hold by your left foot!”, “Breathe”, “Take a rest”, or “Use the hold around the corner”.

The atmosphere in ISO can be quite fun as long as you are prepared! If you are later in the Start List, consider bringing:

  • Snacks and a meal

  • Cozy clothes (some athletes also bring a pillow and blanket)

  • Non-electronic entertainment (books, cards, board games, homework?!)
